THE QUEEN AND HER COURT May Day Bugles blowing, girls running, last minute stitches on costumes — this is the setting for one of the most exciting and picturesque scenes on the Carroll Campus, May Day. This is one of Carroll's oldest traditions and has been carried down for twenty-five years by the Women's Athletic Department. The Toy Shop, the theme of last year's fete was revealed in dances against a background of brightly- colored toyland drops. The plot, built around a doll-lover's story, concerned a poor toy-maker who was very sad when he heard that although his dolls were beautiful, the queen would not visit his toy shop because it was too poor and shabby. So, with the aid of two court jesters he fixed his shop, but in the mean time the two doll lovers were separated, but all turns out happily when the queen buys all the dolls and takes them to her beautiful palace. Miss Kilgour directed the fete and Grace Venable, chairman of May Day, had charge of the pro¬ duction. Mary Esther Wiley was queen of the May Day, sharing her honor with Dean Maude H. Mendenhall. Her attendants were Elizabeth Jacobson, Jeanne Best, Elizabeth Ward, and Laura Jane Birch with Elizabeth Grey as crowner. [ 101
